Our absolutely stunning Monk is a hand-turned soft soled indoor house slipper with a high cut vamp. Made by hand in their Norwich workshop, Bowhill & Elliot have been making footwear since 1874. Their skilled artisans continue to maintain many of the original shoemaking practices such as clicking, turning and lasting all by hand. Bowhill & Elliot are a small family run company whose commitment to making things the right way makes for a natural relationship with Carrier Company that we are extremely proud of.. This beautiful slipper is made by them exclusively for us with the wool upper using cuts left over from making our wool coat. We recommend buying half a size larger due to the shallow toe box on this Monk style. You can read more about Bowhill & Elliot .

One of the oldest shoe manufacturing techniques is the turn slipper, some say dating back to the 14th century.

Made from 2 pieces of material stitched together and made inside out, before being ‘turned’  to disguise the closed line to the inside of the shoe.

Turn slippers have long been part of Norfolk shoemaking history, introduced to the county by the large group of ‘Strangers’ that settled here in the 16th Century, specialising in weaving and shoemaking.
